Why long rides need more than one carb source
Your gut can only absorb glucose at a limited rate no matter how much you eat, generally around 60 g/hour. Fructose uses a different absorption pathway, so combining the two — commonly in roughly a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio — lets you take in and use more total carbohydrate than glucose alone. Past about 2.5–3 hours, this is usually the difference between hitting 90 g/hour comfortably and forcing 60 g/hour with a stomach that's fighting you.
What that looks like on the bike
In practice: a bottle of sports drink, a gel, a bar, and real food like a banana or rice cakes can all contribute to the same hourly total. Reading the label for both total carbs and whether it's a single or dual-source product matters more on long rides than on a 90-minute spin, where almost anything will do.
Common mistakes on the bike
- Fueling by feel instead of the clock. On the bike it's easy to forget to eat until you're already flagging — a timed reminder beats waiting to notice.
- Front-loading calories at the start, then coasting. Fueling works better spread through the ride than banked early.
- Testing a new product on event day. Any new gel, drink mix, or bar belongs in a training ride first.
- Assuming hillier means more carbs regardless of pace. It's the effort level that raises the number, not elevation by itself.
