Plan the carbs first, then the logistics
Start from your target range — commonly 60–90 g/hour for a long or hard ride — then work out how you'll actually deliver that hour after hour. A single format (all gels, or all drink mix) gets harder to stomach the longer the day gets, so most riders lean on a mix.
What to carry
- Drink mix for a steady baseline — easy to consume without thinking about it.
- Gels for concentrated, quick carbohydrate before a climb or a harder section.
- Real food — bananas, rice cakes, sandwiches — for variety and something that isn't sweet.
- A backup beyond your calculated need, especially on unsupported routes where the next shop isn't guaranteed to be open.
Pacing your intake
Fueling on a schedule — say, every 20–30 minutes — beats waiting until you feel like you need it, since by the time hunger or flagging energy shows up, you're already behind. This matters more the longer the ride, since a small early deficit compounds over six or eight hours.
Resupply and self-sufficiency
On rides with shops, cafés, or aid stations along the route, you can plan to top up rather than carry everything. On remote gravel or rural routes, treat resupply as a bonus, not the plan — carry enough to finish even if a stop is closed or skipped.
Heat, sweat, and fluids on long days
Long rides in the heat raise your fluid and sodium needs alongside your carbohydrate target — the two aren't the same problem, and a drink strong enough to hit your carb number isn't necessarily right for your fluid needs too. Plan them somewhat separately, especially on hot days.
Test it before it matters
Whatever plan you land on, run it on a long training ride first. A gut that's never handled 80 g/hour for five hours shouldn't find that out for the first time on event day.
Common mistakes
- Under-planning for an unsupported route. A closed shop shouldn't be the reason you bonk.
- Relying on one product for the whole day. Variety helps both your stomach and your motivation to keep eating.
- Not accounting for heat separately from carbs. Both matter, and they're not solved by the same bottle.
